Worried about the recent change in the assessment level of Nepal? Read this blog to get all the facts.

The Australian government has moved Nepal from Assessment Level 2 to Assessment Level 3. To understand what this means for you, Nepali students, continue reading this blog.
Australia follows the Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF). This framework combines evidence levels from both education providers as well as country of residence of students. It is designed to make applying to Australia easier and simpler for international students. The Australian government moves countries to different evidence levels based on that country’s past track record (as well as visa cancellation, refusal, overstaying, etc.) of compliance with rules and regulations enacted by the Australian government.
So, Australia Assessment Level (for countries) is basically an evidence level required for international students of a country designated by the Australian government. That evidence could be financial, academic, etc. The higher the AL, the higher the evidence requirement (and thus the higher the number of checks).
There are mainly 3 Australian assessment levels (AL).
Students from countries that have this level require the lowest amount of evidence for their study in Australia. This level basically means that students from these countries have thoroughly followed and will most likely continue to follow the rules and regulations of the Australian government. And thus, goes through a lower number of checks performed by the Australian government (and visa processing will be fastest at this level).
Students from level 2 countries are considered to be slightly riskier and thus require a higher number of evidence. Evidence requirements may be a thorough financial record, tax records, academic records, experience, GS, etc. Immigration agents perform thorough background examinations of students from countries that fall into this category (and Australian study visa processing will be slightly slower than that of level 1).
Students from countries at this level are considered riskiest and thus require a higher amount of evidence for their study in Australia. Students falling at this level will face a higher number of checks/scrutiny on their documents, financial background, enrollment evidence, and many more. Unfortunately for students of this level, they will face thorough scrutiny at every step of the way, be it is financial, academic, or any other aspect.
As of 8th January 2026, Nepal has been moved to Australia Assessment Level – 3 from AL - 2.
Australia Assessment Level of Nepal is 3, which simply means that students from this country will face a higher number of checks in their financial, academic, English proficiency test, family members, etc. Students may also be required to provide additional supporting evidence (if requested by an Australian immigration agent). Not only that, but visa processing will also be longer as Australian immigration needs to go through a larger number of checks.
Note: Many students seemed to be confused about the English proficiency test requirement, as this was already asked even when we were at assessment level 2. To put it simply, students were asked to give these test documents to reduce the risk of visa/university refusal. But now that we are at assessment level 3, this evidence is actually required by the rules and regulations of Australia.
In conclusion, the change of the Australia assessment level for Nepal means that students should thoroughly check all the documents (especially financial, academic, and English proficiency-related) as well as provide a higher number of evidence to support their study in Australia.

As of 8th January 2026, Australia's Assessment level of Nepal is 3.
If you applied to Australia before this change, you will be assessed as per the assessment level at the time of your application, i.e., Assessment level – 2. This change is for any students who are going to apply to Australian study visa.
It depends. If you have all the necessary documents (12 months) - financial, academic, English test, GS (clear explanations of study goal, career path), etc. Then, you may lodge your Australian study visa.
But, if you are unsure as to your document's strength and clarity, a consultancy like Search Education can provide highly valued counselling, so visit us or contact us for personalized expert guidance.
Generally speaking, any application lodged before the new changes is processed as per the previous assessment level (AL), i.e., as per AL–2. But, if you have lodged your application at the time of this change, you may be processed as per the new level.
But please understand this is a generalization; your actual circumstances may influence this processing.
Students who intend to apply for an Australian study visa should focus on thoroughly checking their documents (make them strong (strong financial, English, GS, and academic background) and clear) and providing said documents to the respective university/Australian government. Please follow the rules set by the Australian government as well as respective universities, i.e., if they ask for additional documents, provide them.
Generally, universities used to ask for 6 months documents, but now they may ask for 12 months documents. So, reach out to your respective university to learn more about document requirements.
