IELTS exam modes
IELTS exams are conducted in two modes, namely:
IELTS on computer:
The sections of the test, Reading, Writing, and Listening, are taken on a computer, but the Speaking test is done face-to-face with an examiner.
IELTS on paper:
Reading, Writing, and Listening test sections are taken on paper, whereas the Speaking test is taken face-to-face with an examiner.
As of 27th June 2026, students will have the option of taking IELTS on Computer only. Students can now take every component except Speaking on a computer. But they can take the writing component on Paper. The speaking component of IELTS is done face-to-face with an examiner.
Writing on Paper is exactly what it sounds like; students will have the option, when booking dates, to take the writing component of the IELTS test on paper. But if it is chosen, they will also be required to take one skill retake of the writing component on paper.
IELTS Modules: IELTS test modes
There are four IELTS modules, namely Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, which are part of both the Academic and General Training formats. The Speaking and Listening modules are the same for both tests, but the Reading and Writing modules are different.
